REPETITION
Sample Images

paintbrushes

vicegrips

matches

shingles

tasses

I printed these images and others on transparencies and assembled them into a book, depicted below:

The transparencies can be lifted off of their white backgrounds.

REPEATREPEATREPEAT

I intended to explore in my book the relationship of the parts with the whole. Each image captures several of the same item, so that the success of the image cannot depend on any one of the objects, but on the way they interact. Thus the reader is forced to see the image as a whole. To create an intriguing whole, I employed several distinct techniques: symmetry, focal depth, oblique lighting, etc.

My images are all set against a simple background. They are nearly all deliberately crafted to point out the details of everyday items; that is, I staged the photos rather than capture a preexisting moment. Many of my photos capture the subject in such a way as to obscure its identity: it is not obvious at first what the subject is. None of my photos have a natural subject; I avoided documenting the repetition found in nature in favor of the repetition man creates.

It is very important in attempting such a project to be deliberate with one's lighting and one's arrangement. The objects in and of themselves are nothing extraordinary, but their arrangement and the composition of the photography create interesting interplay between them to create intriguing wholes.

  1. Hello Matthew!

You're pictures are very handsome! I really like the use of color coordination, along with using photoshop to effectively show textures and composition.

    Great Job!

  2. I really liked the book's uniqueness with the use of transparencies. I thought the photographs themselves were really successful as a series and the transparencies made them even more interesting.

  3. I thought the cover was really cool, the way the repeat covered the whole page, but one is drawn strongly to the authors name and the bolded repeat. I also thought the transparencies worked out really well and it was an innovative idea.

  5. I really enjoy Matty's theme of repetition throughout his series. Matty's use of lighting is very successful and draws in the viewer. One of my favorite pictures of the series is the tea cup photograph displaying Matty's creative use of the handles to form a flower. I also like Matty's simplicity with the vicegrips, shingles and paintbrushes. Matty has many successful themes that are seen throughout his series and I thoroughly enjoyed viewing his photographs.

  6. I was really intrigued by the cohesion of the series as a whole. The theme and commonality of repitition was carried very well throughout the whole project. Moreover, I think the distinct clarity and focus of the images, and the bright, attractive colors really made them more interesting to look at. Nice Job!

  7. Matty, I absolutely love your photographs. They are all composed with such intention and admirable composition. All of the photos in your series flow so well together and I really like the theme of repetition. The lighting makes your photographs look very professional and well done as well. As if the amazing photos weren't enough your creative layout on the clear plastic paper on top of the white paper really makes for a wonderful and inspiring book.

  8. Matty, I love all of your photographs, they fit together so well as a series. Your cover, and the way you put the transparency over the words is really amazing. It fits so well with the theme of the series. I think the fact that your photos are on transparencies makes your book even more interesting to look at, even just being able to flip the image over and look at it upside down as you flip through the pages.

  9. I love your photos! Each photo follows the same theme while being individually unique and intriguing. Every photo, though all a of repeating objects, is shot at such an interesting angle and your compositions are extremely thoughtful. Your book came together beautifully as a piece of art and I absolutely love the "repeatrepeatrepeat" cover that is set behind the transparency.
